Pints With Profs | Hosted by Dalhousie Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Society 2024, by Mohammad Johar
On October 3rd, 2024, the Dalhousie Mechanical Engineering Society (Dal Mech Eng Society) hosted its "Pints with Profs" event at the T-Room, a casual gathering that drew over 100 students from various engineering disciplines. The evening was a huge success, creating a laid-back space for students and professors to connect over drinks, games, and food. Students appreciated the rare opportunity to engage with their faculty members outside of the academic setting, helping foster stronger relationships between them and their professors.
Throughout the event, students had the chance to chat with several prominent professors from the Mechanical Engineering department, including Dr. Darrel Doman, Dr. Lukas Swan, and Dr. Baafour Nyantekyi-Kwakye. These conversations were lighthearted yet meaningful, allowing students to discuss everything from research and career advice to life outside of university. The event helped students see their professors as approachable mentors, making them feel more comfortable reaching out for guidance in the future.
Of course, no social event is complete without food, and hence this event delivered plenty of free pizza for everyone. As students enjoyed their slices and drinks, they played pool, challenged each other to games, and caught up with their peers. The T-Room’s full bar contributed to the relaxed vibe, allowing everyone to unwind after a busy day of classes. The combination of games, food, and drinks made the event more than just a networking opportunity—it became a chance for students to take a break from the demands of their academic lives and enjoy some well-earned downtime.
Toward the end of the night, excitement filled the room as the Dal Mech Eng Society held a raffle for mechanical engineering-themed merchandise. Two lucky students won exclusive Dal Mech Eng merch, ranging from t-shirts to accessories, much to the delight of the crowd. The winners were thrilled, and the raffle added a fun and memorable element to an already fantastic event.
Above all, "Pints with Profs" offered students a much-needed breather from their busy university schedules. It provided a moment to recharge, connect with peers, and build relationships with their professors in a friendly, informal setting. By breaking down barriers between students and faculty, the event helped create a stronger sense of community within the Mechanical Engineering department.
The success of this event has students eagerly awaiting the next one. The event wasn’t just about academics—it was about building connections, having fun, and celebrating the close-knit, supportive environment that defines Dalhousie’s Mechanical Engineering department. Thanks to the Dal Mech Eng Society’s efforts, the evening proved to be a memorable and valuable experience for all who attended.
Nonetheless, the event played a significant role in fostering collaboration and camaraderie among engineering students at Dalhousie's Sexton Campus. By bringing together students from various engineering disciplines in a relaxed setting, the event encouraged open conversations and the sharing of ideas outside the classroom. This informal interaction not only helped break down academic barriers but also allowed students to form friendships and create lasting memories. Such events strengthen the sense of community, providing a balance to the rigorous demands of their academic journey, and promoting teamwork across disciplines.
