Enviro and Civil: Pints with Profs, by Rory McPhail

Earlier this month, on Thursday October 17th, the Environmental and Civil Student Societies hopped on the bandwagon and held a “Pints with Profs” event in the T room. This was Civil’s second annual Pints with Profs and the first time for Enviro. The event had a solid turnout from the Enviro and Civil students and professors, as well as other random students who happened to be in the T room on a Thursday night. Dr. Lake, Dr. T, Mr. Burgess, Dr. Liu, Dr. Somers and the third years’ favourite design prof from last year, Josh Pidgeon, all made an appearance. Dominos pizza was provided by the Civil Society and if anyone has ever wondered why pizza at events is almost always from Dominos, it’s because it’s so cheap (discount code: 50STDNT for 50% off) and usually the only thing societies can afford.

The T-room has had a rocky start to the year with running out of almost everything you’d want to drink on opening night, to the disturbing and borderline criminal lack of Keiths. This night was no different with a rather limited selection of drinks, Keiths yet again unavailable and rumours of the DSU bar manager quitting that morning. This rumour was reinforced by the suspicious T room closure the next day for “maintenance”. Despite this, Pints with Profs was enjoyed by all with a double header of classic pub activities: trivia and karaoke.

Trivia topics included facts about the profs, campus and some discipline specific knowledge. Turns out there are 21 buildings on Sexton Campus and the alphabet stretches all the way to the Q building. The discipline specific trivia questions provided yet another reason why paying attention in class is important. Trivia ended with an intense speed round for the top two teams that featured civil specific questions and a significant amount of unhelpful shouting from the crowd. After trivia, the mic was dusted off and karaoke began. Classics like Take Me Home Country Roads by John Denver and Taylor Swift’s Love Story were enjoyed by all. Or at least as much as anyone can really enjoy bar karaoke.

This event was a great opportunity for students and profs to interact in a less formal environment than the classroom. In general, society events are a great way to hang out with your peers and interact with people in your discipline that you might not otherwise. In a shameless plug for the Enviro society, there is a society sponsored Mooseheads game coming up that all Enviro students should go to. It’s going to be as much fun, if not more, than Pints with Profs. Everyone else, follow your respective discipline society on Instagram and take advantage of all the events you can!
