Drag Force Article

On March 30th, the Dalhousie EngiQueers hosted the first edition of Drag Force, a student-run drag show highlighting the talents of student and community drag performers. The event aimed to create a safe space for queer individuals and allies alike to engage in the joys that drag culture has to offer. Sponsored by Engineers Nova Scotia and The Sextant, the show took place at the T-Room and had a great turnout!

The Dalhousie EngiQueers are a chapter of EngiQueers Canada. The student society strives to uphold the three pillars of EngiQueers Canada: professional development, education and advocacy, and social connection. The idea for Drag Force was originally generated in January, when some members of the society took part in the annual EngiQueers Canada Conference in Ottawa. The show was conceived in hopes of promoting the third pilar of social connection within the Dalhousie community.

The show started out with opening remarks by hosts Rowan and Quinn as they welcomed attendees and sponsors, as well as special guests Lisa and Lucas, who organized the first-ever drag show called “Dragtacular Spectacular” at the T-Room back in 2009. Then, the performances started off with August and Rachel, who gave us a spectacular rendition of “Rasputin,” drawing inspiration from the beloved “Just Dance” choreography. Next up was Billie Jolene, a seasoned drag performer who lip synced to “brutal” by Olivia Rodrigo. The last act before the intermission was put on by Rowan and Quinn, who had the crowd engaged in their take on “Old Town Road.”

After a quick intermission for attendees to refill their drinks, play some pool, and socialize with other guests as well as with the performers, the show started up again. The first performance back was Nyah with “I’m Too Sexy.” After Nyah, Billie Jolene took to the stage again with Mel G’s “Word Up.” Rowan and Quinn danced around the audience to the iconic “…Baby One More Time,” and the show concluded with Billie Jolene’s rendition of “Flagpole Sitta.”

The Dalhousie EngiQueers would like to thank Engineers Nova Scotia and The Sextant for sponsoring the event, the T-Room for giving the society a space to host the show, the performers for sharing their talents with the community, and everyone who attended the show.

If you didn’t get to attend Drag Force in March, don’t worry! Drag Force will be back to the T-Room in the fall semester for another night of performances!
