Atlantic Engineering Competition 2026: Engineering for All Comes to Dalhousie by Sthairya Karanam

In January 2026, Dalhousie University will host the Atlantic Engineering Competition (AEC) at Sexton Campus, welcoming over 175 students from nine universities across Atlantic Canada. This year’s theme, Engineering for All, invites students to focus their creativity and expertise on making technology and design more inclusive, ensuring no one gets left behind when it comes to the solutions engineers create.

A Weekend of Innovation and Inclusion

During the competition, teams of up to four students will compete in eight categories: Junior Design, Senior Design, Innovative Design, Re-Engineering, Consulting, Programming, Parliamentary Debate, and Engineering Communications. Each event puts students in situations where they’ll be designing products, solving case challenges, building prototypes, or communicating big ideas with a focus on accessibility. This year, every challenge encourages participants to address real-world barriers, whether for people with disabilities, broader communities, or tackling social and technical problems that affect everyone.

The events are being thoughtfully planned by an outstanding organizing committee led by Joya Boutros, a fifth-year electrical engineering student, and Lucas Melanson, a third-year electrical engineering student, as co-chairs. They are supported by a dedicated team of VPs and directors from across the faculty, all excited to create a memorable competition that lives up to Dalhousie's reputation for engineering excellence.

Industry Support and Career Connections

The AEC benefits from strong industry support, with multiple sponsorships contributing to the event. These partners will engage with students through judging, a career fair, and informal meet-and-greet events. For many participants, this is a valuable opportunity to receive feedback and learn directly from professionals who are applying accessibility principles in the real world.

A Complete Experience: Accommodation and Activities

Participants will stay in a central hotel to facilitate connection and convenience. Beyond the competition, the schedule includes social events planned by the organizing team that offer time to relax and connect with peers from across the region. The weekend will culminate with a formal banquet and awards ceremony recognizing winning teams for their creativity and commitment. While AEC focuses on learning and friendly competition, it also celebrates the shared experiences and contributions to a more inclusive engineering community.

Looking Ahead

Everyone involved from competitors, to sponsors, and judges who are eager for the event holds. AEC 2026 isn’t just about winning; it’s about pushing the boundaries of what engineering can do. Dalhousie is proud to welcome the region for this special weekend and looks forward to seeing how students rise to the challenge of engineering for all.
