The Calling of an Engineer, by Bhavneet Bhatia
On March 8, 2025, Dalhousie’s engineering graduates gathered at the Halifax Convention Centre for a milestone event—the 110th Iron Ring Ceremony. This long-standing tradition marks the transition from student to professional, with each candidate taking a solemn Obligation to uphold the ethical and professional standards of engineering.
For those in attendance, the weight of the moment was undeniable. The ceremony, overseen by the Wardens of Camp 7 Halifax, followed the same ritual that has united engineers across Canada for nearly a century. After reciting the Obligation, each graduate received their Iron Ring, a simple yet powerful symbol of responsibility and commitment to the profession.
With the formalities complete, the real fun began. Graduates and alumni headed to T-Room, Dalhousie’s legendary engineering pub, where conversations flowed as freely as the drinks. It was a time to unwind, share stories, and reflect on the years of hard work that led to this moment.
From there, the Mechanical Engineering graduates took the celebration to Loose Cannon, where the much-anticipated unofficial class awards were handed out. Signed by Dr. Groulx, these awards were a mix of hilarious and well-earned titles — “Professor’s Minion”, "Library Lurker", "Class Dad", "The TRoom Titan" and many more. These lighthearted awards added a personal touch to the evening, making everyone eager to see who would take home each title.
As the night progressed, all Iron Ring recipients converged at Pacifico for the final celebration. A DJ kept the dance floor packed, and the energy in the room was electric. It was the perfect way to commemorate the journey—years of late nights, endless assignments, and unforgettable friendships, all culminating in one unforgettable evening.
The 110th Iron Ring Ceremony wasn’t just about receiving a ring—it was about celebrating the bond shared by Dalhousie’s engineering graduates. As they stepped into the next chapter of their careers, one thing was certain: the memories of this day, and the friendships forged along the way, would last a lifetime.
Congratulations to the Dalhousie Engineering Class of 2025! May your Iron Rings remind you always of your responsibility to uphold the highest standards of engineering excellence.
