Sextant WiE Chicago Trip, by Molly Richardson

On Wednesday, October 23rd, ten Dalhousie engineering students awoke bright and early to begin their travels to Chicago, Illinois. These students were going to attend the world's largest women in engineering and technology conference. WE24: Together We Rise, is a flagship conference hosted annually by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). This event is designed for professionals and students to network, gain career insights, and connect with industry leaders on innovation. Attendees could attend a variety of workshops, keynote speakers, presentations, and a career fair.

Thursday, October 24th kicked off the start of the conference. The delegates eagerly arrived at the McCormick Center to check into the conference. Attendees were handed complimentary SWE tote bags and water bottles. Sharon Hong from Motorola was the opening keynote. She shared her explorative journey where she delved into the impact of our personal experiences on our deep-seated fears and insecurities. After the opening keynote, attendees had the opportunity to explore the various sessions offered throughout the day. Day one marked the start of the career fair. SWE proudly hosted the world's largest career fair for women in engineering and technology. Collegians and professionals had the opportunity to connect with hundreds of organizations committed to advancing women in engineering. Leading companies such as Space X, Lockheed Martin, Michelin, PepsiCo, Microsoft, and Apple all attended.

Day two began with another keynote speaker. The Dalhousie students gathered in the ballroom to listen to Catherine Hunt Ryan deliver the Friday keynote: Tomorrow is Ours to Build. She discussed the importance of bringing more women into engineering in a world that is predominantly built by men. Her keynote was thought-provoking, powerful, and inspiring. Afterward, attendees had the freedom to explore the many empowering sessions. Day two sessions included Navigating Neurodiversity Disclosure: Insights for Engineering Professionals and The Power of Microgrids: Community Resilience for a Changing Climate.

Saturday, October 26th was the third and final day of the conference. One of the most memorable sessions was called “You Won’t Find Your Life Purpose at 23”. This session was hosted by five early career professionals from a variety of industries and backgrounds. Most notably, the panelists highlighted their experience transitioning from academia to the professional world, demystifying the idea that you will not find your life purpose at 23. They discussed how to navigate post-graduation burnout and imposter syndrome. These young women reminded the group that women in engineering have the confidence and capability to pursue every opportunity presented to them.

To conclude the trip, the Dalhousie delegates boarded the train to travel back to the Chicago airport. This marked the end of an amazing three days at WE24. WE24 was an unforgettable trip that allowed Dalhousie students to attend interactive workshops on leadership and engineering subjects, cultivate relationships, and empower women. By attending this conference, these students gained valuable insight into the North American network of women in engineering. The students are excited to share their new ideas and perspectives with the Dalhousie community. Big thanks to the Sextant Publishing Society for sponsoring two students to attend the conference!
