Tips for Success as a First-Year Student

Are you nervous about your first weeks at Dalhousie? So were we a few years ago, but we made it through! Below, the executive team from the Dalhousie Sextant gives some advice for you to hit the ground running.

What do you do to start the semester strong?

“I make sure to go through my course syllabi and write down all important dates for tests and assignments. This helps me stay on track when studying and prioritizing my time.” – Ashley, 3rd year Civil

“Introduce yourself to your classmates and make friends that will support you through the term.” – Johar, 4th year Mechanical

Which extracurriculars help enhance your school experience?

·       Diploma of Engineering Society (DES). Represents 1st and 2nd years. Joining as a 1st year rep is a great way to gain experience.

·       Cultural Societies. Many social, cultural, and religious groups hold societies at Dalhousie. A list can be found at dsu.ca/society.

·       Dalhousie Sextant Publishing Society (Shameless self-plug). The Sextant publishes articles about Sexton students and events. Writers are paid $50 per article, message editor@dalsextant.org or dalhousiesextant on Instagram if you want to contribute!

Which behaviours did you change to transition from high school?

“If you find yourself struggling, know that you are not alone, but the sooner you seek help the sooner you’ll get ahead” – Ikhlas, 4th year Mechanical

“Your professors won’t hunt you down if you skip class or don’t submit homework; you are responsible for your success” – Cameron, 3rd year Electrical

“Be a good team player and practice good time management. Engineering is not a one man show” – Johar, 4th year Mechanical
